History of Ancient Science (HistAS)

Berlin is unique in the world for its concentration of expertise and resources in the field of the History of Science in the ancient world. The universities are in close co-operation with the Max-Planck-Institut für Wissenschaftsgeschichte and the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften. All major areas in the field of ancient science are represented (such as mathematics, astronomy, meteorology, medical science, biology, physics, mechanics, optics, geography, divination, alchemy); geographically, the scope of research also embraces the ancient Near East and Egypt as well as ancient China (from a comparative perspective); diachronically, it extends to the early modern age and thus also includes the reception of ancient science (e.g., in the Arab world). The programme “History of Ancient Science” offers a structured doctoral programme for the study of the ancient sciences, their methods and theories within their social and cultural contexts, using not only literary sources but also material culture.

Berlin ist weltweit einzigartig für seine Bündelung von Kompetenzen im Bereich der Wissenschaftsgeschichte der alten Welt. Die Universitäten arbeiten hier eng mit dem Max-Planck-Institut für Wissenschaftsgeschichte und der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zusammen. Alle wichtige Bereiche der antiken Wissenschaftsgeschichte sind vertreten (z.B. Mathematik, Astronomie, Meteorologie, Medizin, Biologie, Physik, Mechanik, Optik, Geographie, Divination, Alchemie); räumlich werden auch Vorder-Asien und Ägypten (und komparatistisch auch China) umfasst; diachron dehnt sich die Kompetenz bis in die frühe Neuzeit aus und schließt somit auch die Rezeption der antiken Wissenschaften ein (z.B. in der arabischen Welt). Das Promotionsprogramm „History of Ancient Science“ bietet ein strukturiertes Programm zur Erforschung der antiken Wissenschaften, ihrer Methoden und Ansichten, in ihrem gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Kontext, wobei als Quellen nicht nur Texte sondern auch die materielle Kultur herangezogen werden.

Die Ordnung für das Promotionsstudium HistAS ist im Amtlichen Mitteilungsblatt 06/2012 der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin vom 15. Februar 2012 sowie im Amtsblatt 13/2012 der Freien Universität Berlin vom 20. Februar veröffentlicht.
