Languages and Cultures of the Silk Road (Silk Road)

“Languages and Cultures of the Silk Road” provides a structured doctoral programme for doctoral candidates in the fields of Iranian Studies, Turkology and Central Asian Studies. We supervise dissertations that emphasize linguistics, philology, editing and literary criticism and that deal with historical or cultural and religious studies. This educational programme also makes available the resources of the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften and particularly of its Turfan Studies project. Together with the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften attends the world-wide richest collections of texts belonging to the ancient cultures the Silk Road found at the oasis of Turfan. These texts are written in numerous languages (Chinese, Sanskrit, Tocharian, Old Turkish, Middle Iranian languages, Tibetan languages, Mongolian language, Syriac et al.) and mainly deal with religious subjects (Buddhism, Manichaeanism and Christianity), although there are also some secular texts among them (e.g. treaties in Old Turkish, monastic invoices in Tocharian); the texts are dated from the 3rd to the 14th Century.

Academic rules and regulations for the doctoral programme Silk Road have been published in the official journal no. 11/2013 of 05 March 2013 of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and in the official journal no.12/2013 of 11 April of the Freie Universität Berlin.

„Languages and Cultures of the Silk Road“ bietet ein strukturiertes Promotionsprogramm für Promovierende der Fächer Iranistik, Turkologie und Zentralasien-Studien. Betreut werden Dissertationen mit einem linguistischen, philologischen, editorischen, literaturwissenschaftlichen Schwerpunkt bzw. zu einem historischen, religionswissenschaftlichen oder kulturwissenschaftlichen Thema. Für das Ausbildungsprogramm stehen auch die Ressourcen der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zur Verfügung und des dort angesiedelten Projekts Turfanforschung, die zusammen mit der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin eine der weltweit größten Sammlungen von Texten von der Seidenstraße in der Oase Turfan und Umgebung betreut. Diese Texte sind in sehr vielen Sprachen (Chinesisch, Sanskrit, Tocharisch, Alttürkisch, Mitteliranisch, Tibetisch, Mongolisch, Syrisch u.a.) verfasst und haben vor allem religiösen Inhalt (Buddhismus, Manichäismus und Christentum), obwohl auch einige weltliche Texte vertreten sind (z.B. alttürkische Verträge, tocharische Klosterrechnungen); sie datieren vom 3. bis ins 14. Jh.

Die Ordnung für das Promotionsstudium Silk Road ist im Amtlichen Mitteilungsblatt 11/2013 der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin vom 05. März 2013 sowie im Amtsblatt 12/2013 der Freien Universität Berlin vom  11. April 2013 veröffentlicht.
