Research Center of Ancient Studies
The Research Center of Ancient Studies (RCAS) is a center for international cooperation in the ancient studies. Fellows from all over the world give the research vital impulses, while conferences, meetings and workshops promote academic exchange and strengthen Berlin’s position as an international center for the ancient studies.
In a cosmopolitan atmosphere, new research questions are defined and projects that demonstrate the present-day relevance of the ancient studies are developed. For, the central questions of contemporary ancient studies regarding man’s impact on his environment, political creations such as boundaries and territories, worldviews or representations of body and soul – all of these approach the origins of many of our concepts. They reach to the foundations of our culture in antiquity and are a part of the transformations of the ancient world, transformations whose effects are still being felt today.
The Research Center of Ancient Studies stabilizes the practical knowledge gained in the Excellence Cluster TOPOI; both institutions aim to revolutionize ancient knowledge and science through innovative approaches and both involve a wide spectrum of disciplines ranging from archeology and historiography to philology and philosophy, and integrating the geosciences and other natural sciences.
Das Research Center of Ancient Studies (RCAS) ist ein Ort internationaler Zusammenarbeit in den Altertumswissenschaften. Fellows aus aller Welt geben der Forschung wichtige Impulse, Konferenzen, Tagungen und Workshops werden den wissenschaftlichen Austausch fördern und die Rolle Berlins als internationales Zentrum der Altertumswissenschaften stärken.
In weltoffener Atmosphäre werden neue Forschungsfragen definiert und Projekte entwickelt, welche die aktuelle Relevanz der Altertumswissenschaften verdeutlichen. Denn zentrale Fragen der modernen Altertumswissenschaften zu den Wirkungen des Menschen auf seine Umwelt, zu politischen Gebilden wie Grenzen oder Territorien, zu Weltbildern oder zu den Vorstellungen zu Körper und Seele reichen an die Ursprünge vieler unserer Begriffe heran. Sie berühren die Grundfesten unserer Kultur in der Antike und sind Teil der bis heute wirksamen Transformationen der Antike.
Das Research Center of Ancient Studies verstetigt die Erfahrungen aus dem Exzellenzcluster TOPOI – die Absicht, mit innovativen Ansätzen Wissen und Wissenschaft zur Antike zu revolutionieren, ist beiden gemeinsam ebenso wie das breite Spektrum der beteiligten Fächer: Es reicht von der Archäologie und Geschichtswissenschaft bis zur Philologie und Philosophie und integriert die Naturwissenschaften auch über die Geowissenschaften hinaus.
