Transformations in Sapiential Thought. 4Q185 in Context

The dissertation presents a new edition and tradition-historical analysis of the text preserved on the larger fragments of the severely damaged Dead Sea Scroll’s manuscript 4Q185, that so far has received marginal scholarly attention only. The edition this study offers is based on several digital resources such as the multispectral and high-resolution images provided by the Israel Antiquities Authority and the semantic and editorial resources of the Database of the “Qumran Wörterbuch Projekt” of the Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen. As this study reveals, the newly established text is as a valuable source for the sapiential discourse of the late Second Temple period, as it not only merges the concepts of wisdom and torah but furthermore integrates new tropes by including traditions of eschatological judgment as well as reflections on Israel’s national lore. This survey thus provides further insides to the study of the development of sapiential thought during the late Second Temple period, by presenting a thorough discussion of textual, analytical, and tradition-historical issues of the text of 4Q185.
