Regionality within the cremation grave groups of the Late Iron Age in northern and eastern Central Europe (Przeworsk culture)

The research issue was to confirm or negate the hypothesis about regionality patterns within Przeworsk culture. The ornamentation patterns on ceramics vessels were the central issue of study. Nevertheless, other investigated aspects such as burial customs or vessel preference (which pots were the most decorated ones) were the secondary aspects of studies.

The chronological framework of this study was set in phase from A₁ to A₃/B₁ of polish chronological system. The database was created base on the materials from burial grounds from the Polish territory of Przeworsk culture, five cemeteries of Oksywie culture and from Germany settlements in Leimbach, Westgreussen and Gorsleben in Thüringen.

The working thesis of regional diversity through a change in time and space ornamentation pattern was proved by using several analytical methods. Firstly, it was essential to create a coding system for pottery (unification of language) and ornamentation (classification based on the idea behind the pattern, not a Darwinism way of created typology based on a timeline). The second step was to calculate the percentage share of every investigated feature, then using the results for the spatial analysis, for the correspondence and correlation analysis for all obtained data. The byproduct of this approach is a folk (functional) classification of vessels and ornament classification created for the purpose of statistical analysis but made in an open way that it can be enlarged, which allows adding new patterns and pots to the database in future.
