Athens in Hellenistic Literature
In the context of the geo-political and cultural changes in the Greek world in the period my thesis examines the ways Athens is interpreted and depicted in Hellenistic literature. I analyse the literary constructions of the physical space of Athens, depictions of its mythical and historical past, and its literary legacy to argue for different ways in which Athens was conceptualised and what this can tell us about contemporary Hellenistic culture. The thesis therefore examines Greek negotiations of cultural capital and relationships with the ‘canonical’ past.
