27.11.2024 | 14:00 - 16:00

Vortrag von und Diskussion mit Joy Connolly (City University of New York / American Council of Learned Societies)

Im November ist Joy Connolly (City University of New York / American Council of Learned Societies) Gast des Theory Networks.

Abstract

Decolonizing antiquity; comparative, community-engaged, and public scholarship; AI; declining public regard for humanistic scholarship; reduced enrollments in and funding for many areas of humanistic study; the high visibility of ancient Greece and Rome in popular culture. These are several of the most important intellectual, professional, and social trends facing emerging scholars of ancient cultures. In this workshop, I will discuss the perspective on them that I’ve gained from five years as president of the American Council of Learned Societies, a leading supporter of and advocate for humanistic scholarship in the US. I will discuss how American doctoral programs are preparing students to navigate this complex landscape and some of the opportunities I see for growth in our field. Understanding that conditions in Europe and the United States are different, I welcome discussion of commonalities and contrasts.
