Pottery Network: The Early Helladic II-III Shift Examined Through Ceramic Standardization Analysis at Lerna

08.08.2024 | 13:00

Lecture by Buck Roberson (University of Michigan)

The Early Helladic II-III transition was a period of dramatic cultural change in southern mainland Greece, with many changes taking place in the material culture. One of the most prominent shifts which occurred at this time was in the pottery, which moved from forms with few handles, monochrome decoration, and fairly limited shape repertoire to forms with an abundance of handles, prominent decoration, and widely varied shapes.

Buck Roberson’s research explores the nature of this shift by examining the organization of pottery production in Early Helladic Lerna, a type site for the region. In this project, he uses standardization analysis in order to assess the intensity of pottery production from Lerna in both Early Helladic II and Early Helladic III. The results are then compared, ultimately concluding that production was at the level of very low-intensity household production for domestic use and limited non-economic trade in both periods.
