Thesis: Aristotle’s theory of principles in Metaphysics A
Final causes in Plato’s and Aristotle’s cosmology: Aristotle’s criticism of final causes in the Timaeus.
My dissertation project focuses on the role of final causes in Plato’s and Aristotle’s cosmology. My interest is, on the one hand, to determine the common features and differences on the concept of final cause of both philosophers in their philosophy of nature. On the other hand, I discuss Aristotle’s criticism of final causes as presented in the Timaeus. I discuss the critiques of the cosmic soul and Nous as principles of movement and goodness in De Anima I 3-4 , De Caelo II 1 and Metaphysics Lambda . I also dedicate the final section of the dissertation to Aristotle’s criticism on Plato’s final causes in living beings, the teleology in perception i.e. sight and hearing, and the role of final causes in animal functions, such as breathing, irrigation and nourishment.
