International conference as part of the 2023/24 annual theme "Conflicts and how to deal with them"
The Roman world was by no means as uniform as some self-representations might imply. Rather, it was a broad mixture of diverse and regional identities, kept together by a central administration and the imperial court, as well as by urban and military structures. Existing regional, ethnic and urban identities were integrated and also transformed over time. With the political end of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century, new concepts of identity developed that reshaped existing Roman, urban and provincial identities in a dynamic process. The aim is to develop concrete case studies for projects and concepts for further conferences in order to better understand these processes, their prerequisites and the conflicts they cause.
This conference - organised as part of a fellowship at the Berliner Antike-Kolleg (BAK) and together with the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (DAI) - will explore far-reaching questions about the meaning and context of Roman identity. The aim is to facilitate an exchange on specialised issues between international guests and local researchers in Berlin.
