Abstract

The presentation explores the challenges faced during two distinct geophysical survey campaigns, namely the magnetic mapping of the Early Islamic city of Qurh in Saudi-Arabia, and the grand scale magnetic mapping of agricultural land for solar parks in Ireland. The lessons learned from these projects are applied to refine strategies for optimizing data gathering, interpretation methods, and the analysis of extensive datasets.

The presentation will cover useful tools such as QField, a mobile GIS that researchers and field practitioners can use to log detailed landscape information, such as terrain characteristics, vegetation types, and surface conditions directly onto digital maps. This tool proves invaluable when dealing with larger and more diverse survey areas.

As for the interpretation of these datasets, the use of custom-made color ramps is highlighted, improving our ability to discern complex archaeological or geological features. When compared to more common greyscale representations, these color ramps provide researchers and practitioners with a richer visual context for identifying patterns, anomalies, and correlations within the data at a larger scale.

Lastly, the presentation will explore the topic of automated vectorization and cluster analysis as a powerful interpretation tool. While it is not expected to replace human interpretation in the near future, using these tools can significantly streamline the interpretation process, contributing to a more efficient and insightful analysis of geophysical data.
