KinderUni
The Berliner Antike-Kolleg (BAK) contributes courses on ancient studies topics to the KinderUni program of the Freie Universität Berlin (FUB). One week each year, this annual series of events offers diverse range of hands-on courses for school classes.
Since 2015, we have run courses in this program, including for instance "Geheime Zeichen: Ägyptische Hieroglyphen" (Secret symbols: Egyptian hieroglyphs) This particular course starts with a lecture in which school children learn how the hieroglyph writing system works, who in Pharaonic Egypt was able to write, and how and with what materials they did so. The children then have the opportunity to use a range of tools to write hieroglyphs themselves and thus to apply the knowledge they just acquired in practice.
